Illuminated City

6th October 2016

Lancaster BID is proud to present our new winter project 'Illuminated City'. Illuminated City is a trail of cardboard sculptures installed in shop windows across Lancaster city centre. At night the sculptures light up to create magical scenes in the window displays. The trail will be on display from November 2016 until January 2017.

Lancaster artists Jenny McCabe and Bonnie Craig have created the illuminated trail, along with local children and adults. Pupils and teachers at Bowerham Primary & Nursery School and Cathedral Catholic Primary School have contributed their drawings and helped with printing the sculptures.

Illuminated City follows the popular shop windows project, Illuminate, which took place over the equivalent time period in 2015. The project has been developed from the feedback received from businesses in 2015 and new businesses have been asked to be involved this year.

Businesses included in Illuminated City 2016 include:

  • Gillisons Bag Shop
  • The Market Cobbler
  • RSPCA
  • The Radish
  • Butterfly Bridal
  • Wilde and Well Read
  • Peter Charles Menswear
  • Taylors Opticians
  • Lancastrian Estates
  • Guys & Dolls
  • St Johns Hospice
  • Banks Lyon Footwear
  • Arteria Ltd
  • Kitchen Corner
  • Incandescence couture
  • Waterstones
  • Fired Earth

Rachael Wilkinson, Lancaster BID Manager said: "It's great to be able to offer this project to businesses again this year. Following the feedback from the businesses in 2015, over 90 per cent of the businesses felt more engaged with events in the city, such as Light Up Lancaster, by hosting an illuminated sculpture in their window over the festive period. I'm really excited for the Illuminated City project this year and think it's great that local groups and schools are getting involved in the production of the sculptures. I think this is great way to engage the local community with the businesses who operate in the city centre."
